Ass talks about La Liga club ratings: Barcelona has the highest ratings, Real Madrid ranks second
Recently, Assai talked about the ratings of La Liga clubs. Barcelona is the club with the highest TV ratings, and Real Madrid ranks second.
According to a study by Barlovento Comunicación, Barcelona attracts an average of 1.5 million spectators per game, about 102,000 more than Real Madrid. In terms of total audience, Sevilla tops the list with more than 11.5 million viewers, thanks to their frequent appearances in free live streams.
Barcelona is the team with the largest average audience and attracts the largest number of audiences per game. Real Madrid is the only team that can compete with it, with an average of 1.468 million spectators per game. From here, the list of the most watched teams does not exactly match their results in the league.
Two factors play an important role: the fan base and the number of free live games. Sevilla performed very well in both areas, becoming the third most popular team in La Liga, attracting an average of 1 million spectators per game. Atletico Madrid ranked fourth, with an average of 938,000 spectators per game. By comparison, Valladolid and Getafe have a smaller audience, neither reaching 600,000.
Some teams have a far cry from their rankings in the league, with Sevilla and Las Palmas rising 14 places and Espanyol also rising 6 places. However, some teams failed to attract audiences that matched their results in the league.
For example, Villarreal and Athletic Bilbao will compete in the Champions League next season, but their average audience is 670,000 and 686,000, respectively, eight and seven places below their rankings in the league, respectively. The situation of Athletic Bilbao can be explained as their game has never aired on the free channel.
Like Athletic Bilbao, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Betis and Valencia have never been broadcast on the free channel. This is very important when determining the total audience.
Only Barcelona and Real Madrid can attract a large number of viewers on pay TV, both of which exceed 9.2 million viewers, ranking fourth and fifth respectively. Following closely behind are Sevilla (11.69 million), Las Palmas (10.09 million) and Celta (9.81 million). Atletico Madrid fell to 11th place (7.4 million), while Betis (6.29 million), Athletic Bilbao (6.01 million) and Valencia (5.65 million) were the teams with the smallest total audience.
Being watched more people on TV is not a trivial matter, La Liga will allocate more funds based on the number of viewers at each club, although they do not use the independent audience metrics used by Barlovento.
There is a significant amount of money used in this concept: 25% of TV revenue goes to the social influence of each club, one-third of which is based on the number of viewers during the season. According to recent official data (2023/24 season), the funding used to reward the team with the largest TV audience is about 112.58 million euros. The more audience you have, the more money you get.
