ESPN: Manchester City loaned Reis out to Girona to train him and plan to let him return next season
According to ESPN reports, Manchester City is implementing a long-term "star plan" for Reis. Reis joined Manchester City for 37 million euros in early 2025, but was then loaned to Girona for free less than a year later, which also belongs to the City Football Group.
The report revealed Manchester City's behind-the-scenes plan. This move is to allow him to accumulate experience in Europe's top leagues and prepare for his return to Manchester City in the 2026/27 season. City management are monitoring his development closely and ESPN understands they will be monitoring the Brazilian "every five games".
He was loaned out because of the fierce competition in Manchester City's defense, including Dias, Ake, Stones, Gvadioll and Husanov. It is reported that Bayern and Porto were also interested in loaning Reis, but City Group finally decided to keep him "with" Girona.
According to sources, this strategy is specially prepared by Manchester City for players with "huge potential" and regarded as "potential stars". Internally, it is compared to the training of De Bruyne back then (although the latter was not rented out). Also receiving this kind of training are Echeverry (former Bayer Leverkusen player) and Sweiler Nipan (loaned to Middlesbrough).
At the same time, Reis himself still dreams of participating in the 2026 World Cup. His team understands that Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti's coaching staff is evaluating him and he hopes to get the opportunity to play in friendly matches against Senegal and Tunisia in November. This season, he has played 528 minutes for Girona in La Liga and has yet to score.
