Chasing Dreams: The standards set by Zhan Ku are too high. I don’t know who else can take over the league’s facade.
Recently, Warriors forward Draymond Green talked about who can replace James and Curry as the face of the league in an interview with The Athletic.
Green is in a unique position when talking about Curry and James. The Warriors' outspoken forward has been Curry's teammate since he was drafted in 2012. He knows Curry and loves Curry deeply. Their basketball careers are closely linked, with Curry always at the center. Together they won four championships.
But Green also knows James. Over the years, the two developed a strong friendship. They share the same agent - James' good friend Rich Paul. Green has played against James at the highest level. He knows both players very well. So, what does Green think will happen when they retire?
"You've heard this discussion a lot in the past few years, 'Who is going to be the new face?'" Green said in an interview with The Athletic. "It always comes back to those two guys in the end. I think we're going to keep looking because I don't know anyone else who can carry this load like they can. From a fan's perspective, it's one thing, but they do it in such a graceful way and with almost no mistakes. No offense to anyone, but the bar they set is so high." Green knows the search will continue until the next player or players come along. But why is this part so difficult? Why is what Curry and James do harder to replicate than what other star players do in the spotlight? Green has his own opinion.
"Because it's not just about the game itself," Green said. "There's also a fan effect, and I'm not sure anyone can get to that point on their own. If you don't have that fan effect, then the other things that they do -- the players that usually attract fans can't do all of those (things)."
Green summed up his thoughts in one word -- "trouble" -- to describe the difficulty of filling the voids of these two players. While he loves and respects both players and is well aware of their contributions to basketball and to him personally, he agrees with Kerr that eventually new players will emerge.
"The Alliance will find a solution," he said.
